London Cuckolds

Technical Manager
Central School of Speech and Drama
April 2008 – June 2008

The London Cuckolds was a restoration comedy performed by 3rd Year Acting students in the Central School of Speech and Drama’s Embassy Theatre, a small to medium sized proscenium arch theatre space.

As Technical Manager I was directly responsible for the Fit-Up of the fairly large traditional set and the safety and practicality of the many varied technical moments and elements of the performance.

My responsibilities included:

-    Planning and running the Fit-Up

-    Collaborating with the Production Manager, Stage Manager and other Heads of Department to produce an efficient Production week schedule

-    Risk Assessment and supervising Technical Rehearsal, in particular actors working at height on semi-permanent platforms and ladders and the operation of pyrotechnics

-    Collaborating closely with the professional Director and Stage Manager to coordinate and choreograph the large and complex scene changes

-    The safe rigging and operation of several large flown scenic elements

-    Planning and coordinating very limited wing space

-    Building and adapting props, furniture and practical scenery that the Scenic Constructors did not have time to complete

-    Planning and running a large and complex interval scene-change and preset.

“I don’t need to tell you the enormous demands made on all departments in order to stage The London Cuckolds - and all on a comparatively small budget. I was very impressed with the sheer hard work and enthusiasm of all the students concerned and the quality of their work was very impressive. The set, the costumes, the construction, the lighting, the technical - the list is endless - were all excellent. Finally I think the whole production looked stunning and worked extremely well.” Paul Tomlinson Director The London Cuckolds
