Opera Holland Park

Deputy Stage Supervisor
May 2009 – August 2009

Opera Holland Park is a 10-week outdoor repertory opera festival funded and run by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea on a temporary site in Holland Park.

Working as a deputy to one of Opera Holland Park’s two Stage Supervisors I was responsible for assisting and deputising for him in the fit-up, technical rehearsal and running of 3 of the 6 operas in the season and the daily turnarounds of all 6 sets. I was offered and able to undertake this role whilst still completing my course at Central.

My responsibilities included:

-    Planning, organising and running the Fit-Up and Turnaround of 6 Mid-Scale opera sets

-    Managing professional crews of up to 7 people in both Fit-Ups and Turnarounds

-    Ensuring that appropriate Health & Safety and Working Time Regulations were adhered to

-    Assisting the two Stage Supervisors in hiring crew members and keeping on top of a tight personnel budget

-    Collaborating closely with the Directors and Designers of my 3 operas to produce appropriate solutions for the technical elements of the shows

-    Devising and writing show cue sheets and hiring and training show crew

-    Adhering to a tight production schedule in a professional collaborative environment

-    Scheduling technical time on stage effectively

-    Preparing some sets for storage and re-use

“I was really impressed with your hard work and positive professional attitude. You and Sam have done a great job and I’d happily work with you both again. I was shocked when you said you were still at university” Stephen Barlow Director Hansel und Gretel, Opera Holland Park 2009
